About

Stefan Triffa, a contemporary abstract expressionist, carries on the legacy of the movement with a deeply personal approach that blends raw emotion, spontaneity, and formal experimentation.

Emerging in the 1980s, Triffa’s artistic journey began at a time when abstract painting had fallen out of favor, overshadowed by the rise of neo-pop, conceptual, and minimal art. However, this seeming obstacle became a turning point for the artist, enabling him to cultivate his voice in abstraction, unbound by the prevailing trends of the art world.

Having studied under second-generation Abstract Expressionists such as Pousette-Dart and Theodoros Stamos, Triffa embraced the core tenets of the movement—two-dimensionality, color, gesture, and sentiment—while forging his path. His process is immersive and ritualistic, often unfolding in the solitude of early mornings or late nights. Laying the canvas on the floor, he begins his work with an instinctual search for emotion, applying color through dynamic gestures or the delicate technique of decalcomania. This initial layer sets the tone for the composition, often dictated by his bodily engagement with the materials—whether through rapid, impassioned movements of his hands or more deliberate, reflective actions.

Triffa’s works are born from this tension between spontaneity and contemplation. The creation process is one of trial and error, with the artist stepping back frequently to evaluate and revise, much like a “god” shaping his universe. His compositions often feature abstract forms, handprints, and organic silhouettes that evoke a sense of mystery and exploration. The goal is always to convey light, dark, and emotion without mediation, avoiding representational imagery and embracing the abstract as a way to express the ineffable.

For Triffa, abstract expressionism is not just a style but a lifelong pursuit of avant-garde exploration, where each canvas becomes a performative adventure in articulating human emotion and experience.
