About
Alvin Hollingsworth (1928–2000) was a pioneering African American artist whose work spanned painting, illustration, and comic book art. Born in Harlem, New York, Hollingsworth emerged as a significant figure in both the fine art and commercial art worlds.
Hollingsworth's artwork often explored themes of social justice, civil rights, and African American life, reflecting his deep engagement with issues of race and identity. Hollingsworth's bold use of color and expressive forms captured both the vibrancy and struggles of Black communities. In addition to his fine art, he was also a skilled illustrator, contributing to major comic book series in the mid-20th century.
Hollingsworth taught at the City University of New York (CUNY), inspiring generations of artists through his teaching and socially conscious approach to art.
